Growing up, we pretty much ate the same meal every Christmas. And that meal was always traditional “Thanksgiving” food if you will. What I mean is there was always turkey, ham, dressing, macaroni and cheese, etc. You get the point, right. When I began to cook, I remember feeling so intimidated. The huge spread can feel overwhelming to a new cook. Over the years, I’ve not only gotten the hang of it, I’ve mastered the Thanksgiving spread, so much so that I’ve been charged with hosting the last few years. I have no complaints because it’s probably one of my favorite things to do. I love hosting and cooking for my loved ones. Though this year‘s Christmas will look different, my family still wants to feel a sense of normalcy. Which is why they are upset that I’ve begun to protest the traditional dinner. Hear me out!
Thanksgiving food is delicious, there’s no doubt about it. But let’s face it, there’s nothing exclusive about it. In our family (and most black families I know) this meal is not only reserved for Thanksgiving but for every major holiday except Fourth of July. And it is for that reason that I’m begging for something different. I’m not asking for anything outrageous. I’m not suggesting that we eat chili. I actually want to get a little bit fancy. Let‘s dress up, eat a delicious steak, sip wine, and eat cheesecake! Nobody wants this but me. In fact, my tastebuds are always a far cry from what my husband and children crave. They have simpler palate, while I’m on the more adventurous side willing to try anything at least once. Only time will tell what we’ll have. No matter what we decide, it’ll be delicious and edifying to the soul. What are you guys eating this year? Are you going traditional or are you switching it up? Let me know what you’re having and what you think we should eat!!!
